River Surfing History

The first attempt to stand up and surf on a river occurred in Germany on 5th of September 1975.

Two brothers from the small Bavarian town of Trostberg head
ed to Munich to search out a surfable wave. The Pauli brothers had previously tried to surf rivers before the epic trek to Munich. However, their early attempts had been less successful and required the use of a tow line to ride. On the 5th of September the Pauli brothers, Arthur and Alexander, were the first to surf the Flosslaende on the Iser River in the heart of Munich. They accomplished this without the use of a rope. Within a short period of time word spread throughout Munich that there was indeed a surfable wave in the city. The local scene began growing from that point. Because the river wave happens to be near a local campsite traveling surfers began having a crack at the wave, Australians, South Africans and Americans are counted amongst the pioneers of the Flosslaende river wave.

The growth of river surfing in Munich was so rapid that before 1975 could end Munich was the scene of the first river surfing competition. The competition ended with the crowning of Arthur Pauli as the first Bavarian Champion, and by all accounts the first man to receive a title from river surfing. At the same time the first non-German to receive an award in river surfing was Australian John Vardon who received the International Award during the competition.

With such a growth of the sport over a few months the local riders of Munich founded the first organization dedicated to river surfing, the Muenchen Wellenreiter E.V. (Munich Waveriders Association). It is this association which was the fore-runner to all the current river surfing associations. The Munich Waveriders Association provided the local surfers with a united voice, and with the hierarchy to promote, and facilitate river surfing competitions and events over the next few years. Unfortunately interest dropped a bit and the first casualty was the Munich waveriders association, it ceased to exist only a few years after its inception.

Munich’s river surfing community went without an established organization for some 30 years, until in 2000 a handful of forward thinking individuals re-established an organization to guide river surfing within the city, the Grossstadtsurfer E.V. (City Surfers Association) was born. The main driving force behind the re-establishment of an organized voice for river surfing within Munich is the fact that river surfing is technically illegal within the city limits. Since its founding the Grossstadtsurfer E.V. has been fighting to give Munich’s watermen a voice at the city level and they have brought back organized competition to the FlossLaende Wave. At least once a year the Grossstadtsurfer E.V. holds a river surfing contest. Those contests have grown so that they now include several different categories for the competitors, including a women’s division.

Since Alexander and Arthur Pauli’s September adventure to the flosslaende another 3 surf spots have been pioneered in Munich including, Eisbach, Grosshesseloher Bruecke, and Wittelsbacher Bruecke. The Eisbach deserves further attention when discussing Munich’s river surfing community. The Eisbach is considered to be the best wave in Munich but its downfall is how dangerous it is. To date some of the injuries incurred here have been: the loss of a knee cap, shattered shoulder, ruptured aorta which almost led to a total leg amputation and in 1980 the first recorded death of a river surfer. Eisbach has since become a heavily localized spot with the locals preventing the inexperienced from accessing the wave.

Currently there are about 400 surfers riding in Munich, with more new people constantly becoming involved. Munich has also shown how this sport can grow and support local industry as a surf shop, and several shapers have popped up in Munich to help supply the surfing demand of the city.

Definition of Skateboarding?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Skateboarding is the act of rolling on or interacting with a skateboard. Someone who skateboards is called a skateboarder or skater. SelefpSkateboarding can be an art, hobby, sport or a method of transportation. It is often marketed as an extreme sport, although this is criticized by some skaters. Because of its creative aspects, it can also be seen as an art form. Skateboarding has been shaped and influenced by hundreds of skateboarders throughout the years. A 2002 report by American Sports Data found that there were 12.5 million skateboarders in the world. Eighty percent of skateboarders polled who had used a board in the last year were under the age of 18, and 74 percent were male. The first skateboard originated sometime in the 1950s and coincided with the initial popularization of surfing in California. The earliest skateboards were homemade and were constructed of flat wooden planks attached to roller-skate trucks and wheels. Skateboarding was originally called "sidewalk surfing" and early skaters emulated surfing style and moves. Skateboards may or may not have evolved from "crate scooters." Crate scooters preceded skateboards, and were essentially similar except for having a wooden crate attached to the front, which formed rudimentary handlebars. In the film Back to the Future, Marty McFly is seen confiscating such a scooter from an unsuspecting 50s youth, and ripping the crate off to fashion an improvised skateboard. In the mid 1960s skateboarding became something of a craze. A number of surfing manufacturers such as Hobie and Makaha started building skateboards that resembled small surfboards and assembling teams to promote their products. The popularity of skateboarding at this time spawned a national magazine, skateboarder magazine and the 1965 international championships were broadcast on national television. The growth of skateboarding at this time can also be seen in Makaha's sales figures which quoted $4 million worth of boards between 1963 and 1965. Yet by 1966 sales had dropped significantly and skateboarder magazine had stopped publication. Skateboarding's popularity dropped and remained low until the early 1970s. Second generation In the early 1970s, Frank Nasworthy started to develop a skateboard wheel made of polyurethane. The improvement in traction and performance was so immense that the popularity of skateboarding started to rise rapidly again, and companies started to invest more in product development. Many companies started to manufacture trucks (axles) especially designed for skateboarding. As the equipment became more maneuverable, the decks started to get wider, reaching widths of 10 inches and over in the end, thus giving the skateboarder even more control. Banana board is an term used to describe skateboards made of polypropylene that were skinny, flexible, with ribs on the underside for structural support and very popular during the mid-1970s. They were available in a myriad of colors, bright yellow probably being the most memorable, hence the name. Manufacturers started to experiment with more exotic composites, like fiberglass and aluminum, but the common skateboards were made of maple plywood. The skateboarders took advantage of the improved handling of their skateboards and started inventing new tricks. Skateboarders, most notably the Z-Boys, started to skate the vertical walls of swimming pools that were left empty in the 1976 California drought. This started the vert trend in skateboarding. With increased control, skateboarders could skate faster and perform more dangerous tricks, such as slash grinds and frontside/backside airs. This caused liability concerns and increased insurance costs to skatepark owners. Many skateparks went out of business and were torn down. By the beginning of the 1980s, skateboarding had died again. Third generation The third skateboard generation, from the mid eighties to early nineties, was started by skateboard companies that actively promoted their art. The focus was initially on vert ramp skateboarding. The invention of the no-hands aerial (later known as the ollie) by Alan Gelfand in 1976 [1] made it possible for skaters to perform huge airs off vertical Current generation The fourth and current generation of skateboards is dominated by street skating. Most boards are about 7¼ to 8 inches wide and 30 to 32 inches long. The wheels have an extremely hard durometer (approximately 99a). Additionally, very high durometers offer the benefit of reduced drag on hard surfaces which results in an overall faster ride. The wheel sizes are relatively small so that the boards are lighter, thus making tricks more manageable. Today, modern wheels are currently around 48 to 60 mm in diameter and advances in technology have made them extremely light compared to the wheels of the eighties. Most decks are still constructed out of Canadian Maple, with 7-plys being the industry standard for strength and durability. Board styles have changed dramatically since the 1970s but have remained mostly alike since the mid 1990s. The contemporary shape of the skateboard is derived from the freestyle boards of the 1980s with a largely symmetrical shape and relatively narrow width. During the 90s ramp or vert skateboarding dropped in popularity.

towsurfer.com

BbpeaTow Surfing or Tow-In Surfing is a relatively modern water recreational boating sport that was developed by the creative efforts of Laird Hamilton and Strapped Crew surfers in Hawaii in the early 90's. Tow Surfing can be attributed to similar sports such as wakeboarding, surfing, and waterskiing, whereas a person is towed behind a vessel utilizing an extension rope with a grab handle, and standing on an aquaplane device, including the foil boards which has been experimented by the Strapped Crew for the past several years, and products that will come in our near future as the concept evolves and is refined by enthusiasts and product manufacturers. www.towsurfer.com

The Wave Board Skateboard

The_wave191x540 Born from the skate and surf mecca of Laguna Beach and melding the motions of surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding, Street Surfing, LLC is introducing a first-of-its-kind board called The Wave™, blending the anatomy of all three action sports in one distinctive ride -
Street Surfing™.

The Wave board's unique features and benefits include: A two-wheel, 360 degree rotating design, allowing the rider to propel the board forward without touching the ground. Foot platforms attached to a torsion bar, give the rider the ability to tilt for sharp turns, execute precision moves and perform front side and backside 360's. Street Surfers can carve downhill like a snowboarder or rocket uphill, all by slightly bending the knees and twisting at the hips. This body action stimulates the board to move in an "S"-shaped motion that is responsible for continuously propelling The Wave board forward.

With more than 22 million people across the country who actively participate in surfing, skateboarding or snowboarding (according to American Sports Data), The Wave board fills a year-round craving for those who engage in these action sports on a seasonal level due to geographic challenges. www.streetsurfing.com

Is Huntington Beach the real Surf City USA

The owners of two Santa Cruz T-shirt shops sued the Huntington Beach visitors bureau Thursday, contending the Southern California agency's trademark on the term Surf City USA is invalid.

The filing in Santa Cruz County Superior Court is the latest salvo in a years-long dispute between the two cities over the term, popularized in the 1963 Jan and Dean song, "Surf City USA."

An attorney for the owners of the T-shirt shops said the lawsuit is not intended to sort out once and for all which beach town is the real Surf City

"It's about the freedom to use the name," attorney Ted Herhold said. "What we're saying right now is leave us alone. Take your trademark back to Huntington Beach. You can do what you want with it down there, but leave us alone up here in Northern California. And if you don't, we're going to invalidate your (trade)mark."

The History of Surfing

The History of Surfing goes back to the late 1700's as far as any expert call tell. Captain James Cook first discoverd the sport of surfing in 1778 on a trip from Europe that landed him in Hawaii, he also died there trying to kidnap a high Cheif.Hist_b21
" By 1779, riding waves lying down or standing on long, hardwood surfboards was an integral part of Hawaiian culture. Surfboard riding was as layered into the society, religion and myth of the islands as baseball is to the modern United States. Chiefs demonstrated their mastery by their skill in the surf, and commoners made themselves famous (and infamous) by the way they handled themselves in the ocean. Anthropologists can only guess at the origin and evolution of wave-riding and surfboard construction in Polynesian culture, since there's no certainty about the timeline and movements of the Polynesians." check out this website for tons more info on the history of Surfing
